Artist Statement

I create three dimensional work in porcelains and high fired stonewares which are not only beautiful but functional art, and can be used as decorations in homes and yards. All of my work is microwave and dishwasher safe. My pieces are recognized by my multilayering of glazes on individually thrown cups, bowls, plates, vases, casseroles, and very large platters. I create wall hangings with copper and rustic barn wood. They are safe to be hung outdoors, or inside. Some pieces have over six different glazes to give additional depth, dimension and beauty. I carve decorations, stamp designs, use fossils, and also add grape leaves and oak leaves making each piece truly unique. While using many colors on my work, I am working a lot with the Shino glazes which are very earthly, Tuscany appearance and totally unpredictable. They are so fun and popular with my collectors.

My pieces are from $15 for a cup to over $100 for the large pieces.

I begin each pot as a new creation and I never tire of creating my next "masterpiece". When I place the lump of clay on my wheel and begin to create I become totally absorbed with the clay passing between my fingers as it speaks and yields to its birth into a beautiful vessel. I use my electric kiln to bisque fire the pieces to about 1850 degrees and the second glaze firing is in my gas reduction kiln to 2365 degrees. The final firing is about 14 hours and I must wait over two days for the kiln to cool down before opening. If I open it too soon all of my work will be lost as the pieces will likely crack. The opening of my large gas fired is very exciting and also disappointing. The piece I was counting on to be the "masterpiece" may be disappointing, but the one that I was experimenting with glazes and clay could be the "Ugly Duckling" which turned into the beautiful swan. Clay is so much like life with the wonderful surprises being much more exciting than the planned and predictable.

My work is constantly changing with each individual piece unique and never duplicated.

I’ll looking forward to seeing my collectors, old friends and new friends interested in my work at my next show, or by appointment in my studio.
